What's Up

Add Lexington to the Places to Play. On Wednesday at 7:15 PM, we played our first game of  pickleball in the Lexington High School Field House. We started with two nets and can expand if necessary. The new group of beginners that started this week will be bringing reinforcements.

***Be sure to check the blog www.bostonpickleball.blogspot.com before coming, since there will be a number of Wednesdays when the Field House will be unavailable.

Huckins Farm in Bedford MA is eager this coming spring to convert a tennis court to multiple use, which means lines for pickleball. While Huckins Farm is private, I'm hoping we may get some guest passes to spread around.

Pickler of Distinction

A Pickler of Distinction

Tom Pazyra

When you do a Google search for Great Guy, Tom Pazyra's picture pops up. Well liked and respected by all who know him, Tom brought pickleball to Wilmington when there was nothing else between Cape Cod and Andover MA. At 77 years old, Tom is a marvel both on and off the court. He was a Renaissance man before the term was coined. He's run close to ten marathons, works for Wilmington Cable TV and is very active in town affairs. Tom may be a humble man but he will bounce the ball of your toes if your not careful.

Where did you first hear of pickleball?
Three years ago I was staying at The Villages and heard the pop sound of pickleball. I went over to see what was going on. I joined the beginner class and liked the game immediately. I then brought it back to Wilmington

What do you like most of the game?
It keeps me in shape. I just enjoy the game. It gives me the illusion that I can still play. It's quick, fast and I enjoy playing a competitive game.

Where do you play now?
We had the town line two outdoor courts at Wildwood School School this summer. When it gets colder we move into Villanova Hall where we have one court and have been playing for three years.

What was your favorite movie of all time?
It was The Treasure of Sierra Madre but I saw The Verdict with Paul Newman and I really loved it.

What has been your greatest vacation?
We had a wonderful cruise around the Mediterranean with some of our friends including Jimmy Buckley and I had a once in a lifetime rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

Scoring in Pickleball

Explanation of Pickleball Scoring

The following information applies to doubles scoring. In addition to the information below, refer to the service sequence rules in Section 5 of the Official Rules on the USAPA website of the International Federation of Pickleball.
http://ipickleball.org/rules/pbrules-ifp.pdf
Points are scored only on the serve. The receiving side can not score a point. At the start of the game, the player on the right side serves. If a point is scored, the server moves to the left side and serves to the opposite court. Each time that a point is scored, the players on the serving side alternate from the right to left or left to right. That player continues to serve until the serve is lost by losing a rally. Players on the serving team do not alternate sides unless a point is scored. The receiving side never alternates sides.
When the receiving team wins a service turn, the player on the right serves first and continues to serve and alternates sides each time that a point is won. When the first server loses the serve, the serve goes to the second server on the side. When the second server loses the serve, the serve goes to the other team and the player on the right serves first. That pattern continues throughout the game.
Call the score in the order of  server’s score, receiver’s score, then the server number. For example, if the score of the serving team is 3 and the score of the receiving team is 6, and the second server on the side is serving, the score would be announced as 3-6-2. Some players might say “first” or “second” for the server number, for example 3-6-second. Either way is correct. Note that the server number is for that service turn only. Whoever is on the right when the team gets the serve back is the first server for that service turn only. The next time that the team gets the serve back, it might be the other player that is on the right and is the first server for that service turn only. Beginning players often mistakenly assume that the player keeps the same server number throughout the game.
It is important to call the score including the server number prior to each serve. That helps the players to keep the server and the score straight. When you announce, as part of the score, that you are the first server, everyone on the court knows that when you lose the serve, the serve goes to your partner. When you announce that you are the second server, everyone knows that when you lose the serve, the serve goes to the other team. To minimize the advantage of being the first team to serve in the game, only one player gets a service turn on the first service turn of the game. To help everyone remember that the serve goes to the other side when that player loses the serve, it is customary to say that the player is the last server or second server. Therefore, at the start of the game, it is customary to say that the score is 0-0-2. The “2″ means that the serve goes to the other side when the serve is lost.
At the start of each game, make a mental note of the player that served first for each side. If the rotation is done correctly, a team’s score will always be even when that player is on the right and odd when that player is on the left. As you call the score, use the player position as a double check on whether you have the correct score.

Purchasing a Paddle Guide

So You Want to Buy a Paddle. See below for help from Prem Carnot, The Picklball Guru. It's from his blog at http://pickleballhelp.com/whats-new/

Weight

Pickleball paddles generally range in weight from 6.8 oz (about the weight of a softball) to 14 oz (almost the weight of a can of green beans).
The advantage of a lighter paddle is that it is easier to maneuver (especially up at the net during quick volleys).
The disadvantage of a light paddle that is too light, is that you experience more of the impact/vibration in your arm & elbow because there is less mass to counter the ball.  Of course, this is much less in Pickleball compared to tennis, for example, but it can make quite a difference.
The heavier your paddle, the more “oomph” it adds to your slams & hard shots, but the more strength it takes to control it on the softer shots.

The Bottom Line on Pickleball Paddle Weight

If you are a current or former table tennis player, or you’re accustomed to using your wrist to execute many of your shots, you’ll probably prefer a light- to medium-weight paddle.
If you are a current or former tennis player, you may prefer a heavier paddle because you’re accustomed to the weight of your tennis racket in your hand.
(I don’t have much experience with Squash or Racquetball so if you have a general suggestion for those players, please feel free to share it in the comments below.

Length

The regulations for the dimensions of a pickleball paddle are based on the total length x widest width.  Most paddles add length to the face by shortening the length of the handle, keeping the total length and width the same.  This is true for most wide-body and oversize paddles.  There are a few paddles, however, that you’ll see on the tournament circuit, that opt for a much narrow face in order to add an extra inch or so of length.
There are two main advantages of a longer paddle:
  1. It gives you that much more of a reach to volley balls without stepping into the kitchen, and
  2. You get a little extra speed because of the the added distance from the center of rotation when you hit the ball.
However, that extra distance also makes the paddle head feel slightly heavier and less maneuverable at the net.

The Bottom Line

Stick to a regular, wide-body or oversize paddle head, but don’t bother with the extra-long paddles unless you are a particularly advanced racket-sport player who almost ALWAYS hits the sweet-spot on your paddle and doesn’t need much extra width.

Power vs. Control

Some paddles (graphite- or cork-centered, or fiberglass-faced paddles) will give you lots of “pop” for very little effort, which is great for getting the ball from the back of the court over the net by just sticking your paddle in front of it, whether you’re hitting a half-volley drop shot to come up to the net, or whether you tend to play your entire game from the baseline. (Not a strategy I recommend, by the way.)  But the disadvantage of a paddle with so much pop is that it’s harder to control the ball.
The very same attributes that launch the ball from the back of the court can work against you when you are at the net.  When you are dinking at the net, paddles that provide a lot of pop will often make your dinks go higher or deeper than other paddles, which is not a good thing. Up at the net, if you stick that same paddle in front of the ball, it will make the ball fly much higher/further than you hope, reminding you of what it feels like to “leave your partner hung out to dry” as your opponent smashes the ball at their feet. ;)
On the other hand, sometimes the added speed off the paddle makes it harder for some opponents to return the volleys.

The Bottom Line

If you’re a tournament player and/or you’re working on integrating dinking into your game, opt for control rather than power with a composite paddle.  If you tend to stay at the back of the court or want maximum speed with minimum effort, a paddle with more power might be right for you.
If you are an avid singles player, then definitely go for a paddle with more power, since singles is less dependent on dinks or drop shots.

Color

I don’t have a lot to say on this, but just wanted to point out that, unless & until the USAPA makes yellow paddles and/or shirts illegal, it is still a substantial advantage to play with a yellow paddle, because it makes it much harder for your opponent to see the ball as it comes off your paddle.

The Bottom Line

Whether or not you decide to use the color advantage is, of course, your choice.  If you don’t, you might just decide to get a paddle to match your every outfit, and you wouldn’t be the first pickleball player to do so.  ;) (Really!)

Here Are Some Tips for Testing a Paddle

Control

Stand at the no-volley line, and have someone hit the ball hard at you.  Just try take the pace off the ball by holding the paddle firmly and trying to drop the ball right over the net.  Notice how many of your shots fall into the kitchen or how far past the kitchen line they go.

Pop

Off the Half-Volley

Have someone hit an overhead hard at you, while you are in the back of the court.  Just stick your paddle out firmly to block the ball as it comes up off the bounce and notice how often the ball goes back over the net, or whether it falls short.
Off the Lob
Practice hitting overheads and pay attention to the power that the paddle adds (or doesn’t add) to your shot.

Maneuverability

Volley back and forth with someone at the net, alternative forehands & backhands.  Practice bringing your paddle back to the ready position after each shot.  Notice how easy it is the maneuver the paddle, notice any strain in your wrist, forearm or shoulder

EsCapeCod

Humbled in Harwich

It began with a 13-11 loss overtime loss. I was matched with Reading Pickleball Academy graduate, Lauren Healy. We played them tough but Marjorie Berger and Herbie Muther edged us out. Herbie is 92, plays golf twice a week, tennis twice and pickleball three times per week. And he was wounded while fighting the Germans in the Italian Alps in WW II. A wonderful man. I'm thinking of challenging him to a bocce match.
Ask for Frank Crowley if you get here and he will set you up.

South Yarmouth

Where can you play and finish up in what Darwin calls the "biggest hot tub on the Cape," Flax Pond South Yarmouth. Darwin Quealey's the guy in South Yarmouth.

Marstons Mills

Some very good picklers here but no swimming onsite, a real letdown.  It's where I first heard of a frogg tog. I've been wearing mine to work. It's very helpful in keeping you cool on a hot day. George Rice is the man you want see for play.

Sandwich

Some very good players here on Peter's Pond as well. Either that or I am getting worse as the week goes on. I'm sure we will be seeing our share of these players at the MA Senior Games. There were 30 people for four courts and the wait was short. You'd only have time for a quick dip before you were on the court again. Lois Wallace and Dave Brower will see that you get on the court.

Strategy Tips

Here are some basic strategy tips from Dave Brower, the Ambassador in Metrowest. He is looking for volunteers to help with the Senior Games in August in Shrewsbury. Let me know if you can help or interested in playing.

Serve – make your serve count!  Tricky serves that miss the service court or don’t clear the net can cost you more points than you win with them.  Serve deep to your opponent’s backhand to force a defensive return.
Service return - soft and deep, so that you and your partner have time to get to the NVZ.  Keep both opponents waiting to hit the ball at the baseline while you get in position to control the court.  If they pound it back, drop the ball into the kitchen and make them run up and get it.  If they lob, whoever is in the other half of the court from where the ball will land should go back diagonally to return it - lobbing the ball back deep to get time to get back to the NVZ.

Third shot soft - hit their service return softly into the NVZ to force them to play a defensive shot.  Avoid hitting a hard shot at opponents who are already at the NVZ, it is too easy for them to slam it back or drop it into the NVZ, where you will have to run up to play it.

Hit the ball down the middle most of the time.  Avoid the sidelines unless the shot is an easy one or the opponent is out of position.

Hit the ball hard when it is above the height of the net, soft when below.  Use dink shots to draw your opponents out of position, then if you get a return above the net, place it into the vacated area.
Don't sacrifice accuracy for power.

Forget the last shot, concentrate on a good next shot. Mistakes will be made, if the same one is made over and over, change strategy.  If it was a good shot choice, but poorly executed, forgive the error and move on.

Quincy Seniors

Thank you Jon and Camille Power and Tinna Moy for making it such a success, 80 participants!

The Patriot Ledger
May 13, 2014 3:56 p.m.
Barry Welch, Quincy's enterprising recreation director, brings word that the Quincy Senior Olympics, now underway, will serve as a  demonstration site to introduce Pickleball, described as the newest sensation in sports for seniors.

The game is a hybrid of tennis, badminton and table tennis and is played on a court a quarter the size of a tennis court, with hard rackets and a variety of whiffle ball.

Peter Sullivan and three other volunteers from the USA Pickleball Association will demonstrate the game at the Kennedy Center gym on Wednesday May 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Sullivan will explain rules, game strategy and answer questions.

You can try your hand  and equipment will be provided. Wear sneakers if you want to participate.
