Thank you Jon and Camille Power and Tinna Moy for making it such a success, 80 participants!

The Patriot Ledger
May 13, 2014 3:56 p.m.
Barry Welch, Quincy's enterprising recreation director, brings word that the Quincy Senior Olympics, now underway, will serve as a  demonstration site to introduce Pickleball, described as the newest sensation in sports for seniors.

The game is a hybrid of tennis, badminton and table tennis and is played on a court a quarter the size of a tennis court, with hard rackets and a variety of whiffle ball.

Peter Sullivan and three other volunteers from the USA Pickleball Association will demonstrate the game at the Kennedy Center gym on Wednesday May 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Sullivan will explain rules, game strategy and answer questions.

You can try your hand  and equipment will be provided. Wear sneakers if you want to participate.

A Pickler of Distinction

Sue Carnevale

How does she find the time? But she does. Sue always has time for people, especially pickleball people. She has spearheaded almost all the efforts to get pickleball into the North Shore and has she been successful! Sue even had us at a Boston Lobster match where we played live and were featured between games. She has been more than generous with her time as a coach and mentor.  She is a pickler of distinction and a friend to all of us who love the game.

1.How did you first hear of pickleball and where did you first play?

It was about  five years ago, when my best buddy Mardee began talking up pickleball.  She had just come back from her first season of life in The Villages.   Now if you know Mardee, you would understand my next statement.  She told me about pickleball about five times a day for weeks on end.  Mardee is very excitable, especially about her new hobbies.
The following winter when she headed south,  I visited her with my family.  I drove her little pickle-cart (AKA golf cart) to El Santiago.  That was it-I was hooked.  After my week playing, I told Mardee if she came home early, I'd build a court.  Naturally, I was going to build a court anyway!  Although my husband grumbled about ruining the driveway, he got over it.

2.What do you like most about the game?

I love the look the opponents give each other when they both miss the ball, as it whizzes through their center line.  My second favorite part of pickleball is when a new person tries it out, and transforms into another happy pickleball addict.

3  Where do you currently play?

I consistently play at the Beverly Y.  The Tuesday night 7-10 PM slot is my favorite slot and a great social event.  I also like playing at the Pickledome in Malden, but work seems to interfere.   Additionally, I play at Danvers Indoor Sports-another great social event, which extends after court time to a local restaurant for appetizers.   Now that the weather is cooperating, I play in our home court in Beverly.

4.  What is your favorite movie of all time?

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.

5 Favorite vacation spot?

The Caribbean Islands
Sanibel  Island (despite not having pickleball..yet)

6.  What would surprise people if they knew what?

I am a man trapped in a woman's body.  KIDDING.
I drove a Harley for many years.  I actually still have my Harley, but have not been on it since I was in a car accident about ten years ago.  We were hit by a drunk driver who was flying down the wrong side of the road.  It was shortly after that time, when I realized I was not invincible.
I never got on the bike again. but I still won't sell it.

P'Baller of Distinction

Camille Power
The other night Camille brought nine new players into the Pickledome. And then she trained them. Its been this way every week. Camille comes in followed by at least a half dozen friends to learn the game. Camille was the first ambassador in Greater Boston. Her enthusiasm for pickleball and life knows no bounds. Its infectious. I've never met anyone with that kind of energy. When many of us are home taking an afternoon nap, Camille is out discovering a new sport to take up. We are so fortunate that she discovered pickleball and I'm so lucky to count her as a friend. Camille is the first Pickler of Distinction.

How did you discover pickleball?

I learned the sport at the Villages in Florida about three years ago. Was addicted

instantly and played the whole time we vacationed there. Then came home and found

out no one ever even heard of the game. That’s when I decided to become an ambassador

to help spread the word in Massachusetts.

Where do you play?

This past year, pickleball has grown by leaps and bounds in Massachusetts. I play in

North Andover, Reading, Danvers, Beverly, and most recently, Malden, MA,

What do you like most about the game?

I like the fact that ANYONE can play – at any age too! It’s fairly easy to learn, and

even if you have no racquet skills. I love the competitiveness, but I also love the social

aspect of the game. I am an avid tennis player, but I can’t play tennis with my teenage

grandchildren, but we LOVE playing pickleball!

What is your favorite movie of all time?

Definitely Titanic. Rose and Jack stole my heart!

What is your favorite beverage?

Black, (any flavor) iced coffee. I drink it all year along!

What is your favorite vacation spot?

Kennebunk Beach, Maine

What has been your most unusual work?

As I worked for a large Boston law firm for 37 years, one of my many unusual tasks was

trying to make a deadline for an overnight package, watching the Fed Ex truck pull away,

and chasing the truck down the street, pounding on the back and having the driver stop to

take my package! All this at midnight (which was their last pickup).
